You have probably seen the badge. A small medal next to a host’s name, signaling something above the average listing. If you are serious about running a short-term rental as an actual business and not a side hustle, Superhost status is worth understanding.
Here is what it is, how you earn it, what it costs you to lose it, and what it can do for your bottom line.
What Is an Airbnb Superhost?
Superhost is Airbnb’s performance tier for top-rated hosts. There is no application. Airbnb evaluates every host account each quarter against a fixed set of criteria, using your actual hosting data from the previous 12 months. If you hit the benchmarks, you get the badge. If you slip below them, you lose it.
The badge appears on your profile and on every one of your listings. It tells a guest deciding between two similar properties that yours comes with a track record: high ratings, fast responses, and a low risk of cancellation. That is a meaningful edge in a search grid where most listings look alike.
The Four Superhost Requirements
Airbnb assesses Superhost status four times a year, with evaluation windows starting January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Each assessment looks at the trailing 12 months across all listings on your account.
- At least 10 stays, or 3 reservations totaling 100 or more nights. You need enough activity for the data to mean something. New hosts working toward Superhost need to prioritize early bookings.
- A 4.8 or higher overall rating. Not 4.7. Not 4.75. The cutoff is firm. One or two four-star reviews can pull a 5.0 average under the threshold faster than most hosts expect.
- A cancellation rate below 1%. That is fewer than one cancellation per 100 reservations. Airbnb makes exceptions for major disruptive events and other valid reasons, but a host-initiated cancellation without one damages your standing and your search ranking, and Airbnb can withhold Superhost status from accounts with high cancellation rates.
- A 90% response rate within 24 hours. You have to respond to at least nine out of every ten new messages, and accept or decline new reservation requests, within one day. The clock starts at the first message, not at an accepted booking.
Benefits of Being an Airbnb Superhost
The badge itself is not the point. What comes with it is.
- Search placement. Airbnb gives Superhosts a dedicated search filter and stronger placement in results. Guests who filter for Superhosts see only Superhosts. If your badge is active, you appear in that view. If it is not, you do not.
- Guest trust. A guest choosing between two comparable listings will take the one with a verified track record. The badge does that work before they read a word of your description.
- Revenue. Superhosts earn more per listing than standard hosts, on both rate and occupancy. Some of that is the badge and some of it is the operating discipline the badge requires. Either way, the correlation is consistent.
- Annual travel coupon. Superhosts receive a $100 Airbnb coupon every year they keep their status.
- Priority support. Superhosts get a dedicated support line, which matters when something goes sideways with a reservation.
How to Earn Superhost Status
Most hosts who miss Superhost do not miss because of one blowout problem. They miss because of accumulated friction: a few late responses, a lukewarm review from a guest who had a four-star experience, one cancellation that felt unavoidable. The requirements reward systems, not heroics.
- Set up automated messaging. Response rate is pure execution. Pre-written welcome messages, check-in instructions, and mid-stay check-ins sent automatically keep you inside the 24-hour window without living on your phone.
- Invest in the physical property. Reviews drive the rating. Rating drives the badge. A well-designed, well-maintained space with clear amenities, nothing broken, and thoughtful touches earns five stars consistently. A mediocre space gets a mix, and the math does not favor you.
- Never cancel a confirmed reservation. If something prevents you from honoring a booking, contact Airbnb directly before canceling. Explore every option. Host cancellations hurt more than you expect.
- Manage expectations in the listing. Reviews suffer when guests arrive with expectations the listing created but the property did not meet. Accurate photos, honest descriptions, and upfront disclosures protect your rating from guests who grade on expectations, not experience.
We Own What We Design
Every property in our portfolio is one we operate ourselves. We make the sourcing, durability, and layout calls we recommend to clients — and then live with the results, booking after booking.
See Our PropertiesThings to Avoid
- Leaving inquiries unanswered for more than a day. Even a brief acknowledgment protects your response rate. Turn on notifications and treat reservation requests with the same urgency as messages.
- Ignoring maintenance. A non-functioning appliance, a broken blind, a stained mattress. Any of these can turn a five-star stay into a four-star review. Budget for ongoing maintenance as a recurring line item, not an emergency fund.
- Overpromising in the listing. “Breathtaking ocean view” when the ocean is visible from one corner of a second-floor balcony will generate reviews. Not the kind you want.
- Letting personal conflicts become cancellations. The instinct to cancel and rebook at a higher rate during peak season is understandable and damaging. Airbnb flags host-initiated cancellations and it sticks. Truly unforeseen circumstances should be handled through Airbnb, not as a casual cancellation.
- Waiting until the end of the quarter to care. The assessment window is the trailing 12 months. A bad November affects your April, July, and October assessments. There is no last-minute push that fixes compounding problems.
How Karve Design Co. Can Help
We built Karve because we believed a short-term rental could perform like a boutique hotel. Not by mimicking one, but by treating the design, the experience, and the operations with the same intentionality. Superhost status is one result of doing that work consistently.
Here is what we bring to owners who want to operate at that level.
- Design that earns reviews. Our properties are designed from the guest experience forward. We think about how a space photographs, how it functions, and what it feels like to arrive. Guests remark on it in reviews because it is real, not staged.
- Systems that protect your rating. Response cadence, maintenance schedules, listing accuracy. None of it is intuitive to every host. We built the operational frameworks for our own properties and apply that thinking to yours.
- Listing strategy. We know what accurate, compelling listing copy looks like and what it does for your booking rate and review quality. The gap between a listing that attracts the right guests and one that attracts complaints is often in the description.
- Ongoing operations thinking. Superhost is not earned once. It is maintained through consistent operation. We work with owners who want that consistency without the trial and error.

Start a ProjectFrequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to become a Superhost?
You need at least 10 stays (or 3 stays totaling 100+ nights) before Airbnb can evaluate you. Assessments run quarterly, so a new host with strong early bookings can qualify at the first assessment after clearing the stay minimum. Most new hosts qualify within their first year, depending on occupancy.
Can I lose Superhost status?
Yes. Airbnb reassesses every quarter against the trailing 12 months. Fall below any of the four criteria and the badge comes off at the next assessment. Keeping it is automatic as long as you keep meeting the benchmarks.
Does Superhost apply across all my listings?
Status is tied to your host account, not individual properties. When you qualify, the badge appears on every listing you own. Listings where you are only a co-host do not count toward eligibility.
What if I get an unfair review?
You can flag reviews that violate Airbnb’s content policies, and cancellations with valid reasons can be documented and appealed. Neither is guaranteed. The most reliable protection is consistency before a problem arises.
Does Superhost status affect my search ranking?
Yes. Superhosts get a dedicated search filter and stronger placement in results, and Airbnb’s algorithm weighs host quality signals. The badge matters most when other listing attributes are equal.
Is Vrbo Superhost the same thing?
No. Vrbo has its own Premier Host program with different criteria. The badge on one platform does not transfer to the other.
What’s the difference between Superhost and Airbnb Luxe or Guest Favorite?
Superhost is a performance tier tied to your host account. Airbnb Luxe is an invite-only tier for high-end homes based on design and amenity standards, and Guest Favorite is a listing-level badge based on ratings and reliability. They are separate tracks. You can hold Superhost without either.
